Growing up, I had my favorite Christmas records that I listened to and sang and danced along with the entire month of December. As I grew older and moved out on my own, I started Thanksgiving morning with a cup of coffee, homemade scones, and Take 6’s Christmas CD. Other CDs that made my holiday rotation included Ella Fitzgerald, Wynton Marsalis, Vince Guaraldi, Michael McDonald and “Jingle Bell Jazz” (a compilation of various jazz artists playing a wide variety of holiday goodness).

I even have a 3-CD holiday mix that a student that made me one year that includes everyone from Louis Armstrong to Guns and Roses.

Spotify has flattened the musical landscape for me. Whether I’m out shopping, at the salon, or in other public places, it seems like the holiday playlist consists primarily of Diana Krall, Michael Buble, and maybe a little Ella Fitzgerald. They are cool and all, but I get really tired of the same people doing the same songs.

I’ve toyed with the idea of doing a Christmas album. Many of you have encouraged me to do it and have sent me their song requests. I’m not quite ready to make an album, but I’ve been making arrangements and I’m trying them out in full force this December. For those of you in Denmark, you’ve got two chances to be a part of our process:

In putting the program together, my hope is to create a show that gives a feeling of hygge (coziness) and joy without being overly sugar-coated or tired. There are songs that come from my childhood and are songs that just make me happy. I’ve also done a fair bit of research to find and adapt lesser-known songs that deserve a listen while you’re trimming your tree, lighting your candles, or drinking your hot chocolate / gløgg.

For those of you who can’t make the shows, I’m working on getting some video footage. Write me in the comments below if you’d be interested in watching a live stream. I’ll send out links to the highlights sometime in December. If it all goes well, we might be moving towards recording a project for stocking stuffing in 2018.
